Welcome to the wonderful world of virtual assistance, your journey is just beginning! It will be a joyous, yet tumulus ride at times so be sure to fasten your “knowledge” belt! Seriously, being a virtual assistant is a great career choice as long as you are teachable and not afraid of the ‘bumps’ that will come your way.

Here are 3 Things to “Know” While on This Journey:

1. Know your “WHY”– Why did you chose to be a virtual assistant? Write this down. Be so specific and detailed that your words can paint a picture no matter who reads it. My “WHY” reads something like this: “I want to be available 24/7 to my husband and children while providing an income to help offset our families needs. I want to be an active parent in the lives of each of my children: to support, to encourage and to direct.” Your “WHY” can not be centered around money, because there will be times where there is no money. Money won’t drive you through the dry season of your business, you want your “WHY” to get you back on track, to refocus your efforts and drive you!
2. Know your SKILLS– Be honest with yourself. If there is some task that you can not perform then be upfront and honest. Don’t make the rookie mistake of thinking you need to “be everything to everyone”, this will keep your business from flourishing. For example, I do not like shopping carts, I will setup and maintain a clients database, but when it comes to creating autoresponders…not going to happen! I’ll find a virtual assistant that specializes in that particular task and outsource it!
3. Know your CLIENTELE! Oh boy, I’ve heard this said a million and one times but the longer I’m in business the better understanding I get! You have to be clear on “who” you are serving, “what” they need, “where” they are going for answers, ect. Basically, your business success solely relies on the fact that you must know your business is about THEM and that you tailor your website posts, pages, categories, ezine, content, interviews, around what “they” need. Your message can’t be about you, if it is, then change it!

Something I have done is to actually write down and list each of these 3 “Knows” (why, skills and clientele) then beside each one I write down a word or brief sentence. By doing this I am able to stay focused on the task at hand. I actually have mine on a white piece of paper and have it hanging to my white board in my office where I can see it all the time.
